At Bitkaya, we operate in the world of Bitcoin and blockchain — where one of the commonly defended advantages of good-practice Bitcoin mining is that it can make use of stranded energy: power that would otherwise go unused or wasted. Likewise, on Curaçao there is a huge amount of plastic waste — waste that’s “stranded” as pollution, landfill load, or environmental burden.
When we commissioned Bitcoin-symbol keychains made from recycled plastic collected on Curaçao, we weren’t just ordering merch. We were drawing a clear parallel:
- Just as Bitcoin can turn excess or stranded energy into digital value — heat, computing, validation —
- Green Phenix turns stranded plastic waste into material value: useful, tangible, locally-made products.
Our recycled-plastic Bitcoin keychains embody that analogy: digital-world identity meets physical-world resource reclamation.
Who Is Green Phenix — And What They Do
Green Phenix is a social enterprise based in Willemstad, Curaçao. They collect plastic waste from beaches, neighborhoods, and public collection points — sorted by type (PET, HDPE, PP) and color.
What happens next is far from standard waste disposal: plastics are cleaned, shredded into flakes, processed (extrusion, 3D-printing, molding) — and turned into new products: building materials, handcrafted items, souvenirs, and more.
Green Phenix also has a strong social mission: through a “work & learn” program they employ — or retrain — people who were long-term unemployed, offering steady contracts and giving them valuable skills in recycling, manufacturing, and social enterprise.
Through collaborations such as with TUI Care Foundation under the Destination Zero Waste Curaçao program, Green Phenix has helped install many recycling-collection stations across the island (especially in high-traffic or tourist areas), boosting plastic collection and recycling capacity.
In short: Green Phenix transforms plastic waste that threatens the island’s environment into useful, desired items — while creating jobs and supporting a circular economy on Curaçao.
What Our Bitcoin Keychains Represent
By having keychains made with Green Phenix — not just imported merchandise — we signal something deeper:
- Circular value: The keychains are born from plastic that once was destined for landfill or ocean. They make that waste useful again.
- Island-first mindset: We reinforce that as a crypto-business operating in Curaçao, we see value not only in digital assets, but in local context — our community, our island, our waste problem.
- Support for local sustainable enterprise: Our order contributes demand — helping make recycling/up-cycling a viable, ongoing business, sustaining jobs and reinforcing infrastructure.
- Bridging worlds — digital crypto world with physical social impact: Bitcoin (value-theory, decentralization, future-oriented) meets social enterprise, community action, and island-scale resource management.
These key-chains are both a symbolic bridge and a practical investment: they represent a philosophy that value can come from technology and from paying attention to our immediate surroundings.
